History

Starting in 2017, the Northern Football Academy was borne out of an ever-changing educational landscape. On the back of the highly successful Football Excellence program at the College designed by David Black in 2003, the Northern Football Academy is a football-intensive learning experience for Year 10 students, blending pursuits in the world of football with St Monica’s expansive curriculum. It affords the students in the academy the opportunity to continue their studies with a football focus.

Philosophy and Motto

Commitment and Legacy

Being part of the Northern Football Academy means a great deal of commitment on the behalf of the academy member. The expectations are that they not only look to excel and contribute within the academy, but also across the entire school community. Academy students are looking to contribute to Monican life, any way they can, across all fields of endeavour, not just on the football field. Membership to this academy every year is exclusive, therefore, those who are part of it must leave behind them a contribution that has enhanced the academy and sets the bar for the students who take their place the following year.

2 Timothy 4:7

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” St Paul’s efforts in spreading the Good News were paramount to the Church’s foundation in its early years. This second letter to Timothy was written by Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero and was composed just before his execution. His commitment to the Word of God right up until the end of his time on earth and his understanding of legacy are two key components the students of the academy must embrace. The biblical reference 2 Timothy 4:7 can be found on the back of the collar of their jerseys.

Principles and Values

The principles behind the academy are:

  • To enhance each student’s experience, technical ability and knowledge of the game.
  • To investigate possible careers within the world game whether they be as a player, coach, administrator, therapist, agent, the list goes on, creating a potential focal point for future study and aspirations.
  • To ensure that each student’s academic trajectory is uninterrupted. They will be able to pursue VCE or VCAL studies the following year.
  • To demand from them a commitment to the academy and the College by doing everything they can to be great contributors and fine examples as Monicans.
  • To enjoy themselves.
  • To create leaders ready to contribute to an ever-changing world.
